The micro-bal is a participatory choreographic installation in layered realities, created for the Micro-Folies network.

A miniature ball whose performers seem to have stepped out of works from the Musée Numérique, the Micro-Folies' travelling digital museum. The characters come to life and begin to dance together. Each ball scene is housed in its own case — a physical set sheltering a virtual micro-world. The micro-bal springs from the encounter between our imaginations and museum works. What does this Modigliani figure tell us, or this Hopi ritual doll from Arizona, or this photograph by Arwa Abouon? What might their movement be, their story, their personality, their way of relating to others? How might these characters, despite all their differences, dance a ball scene together — and form a human society?

Only part of the micro-bal is visible to the naked eye: the sculptural environments in which the dancers appear in augmented reality. Audiences bring them to life by scanning an image with the Revy app. Headphones on, they immerse themselves in the small choreographic and musical world that inhabits the physical set.

A first version of the micro-bal was created in partnership with the Micro-Folie La Rayonne in Villeurbanne. The project is designed to grow with a new participatory scene at each presentation. The ball unfolds gradually, weaving connections between audiences and territories.
